The Work Experience Program in Alberta high schools is a unique opportunity for high school students to gain valuable skills and earn high school credits by working off-campus. The work experience program in Alberta high schools is composed of three courses: Work Experience 15, Work Experience 25, and Work Experience 35. Each of these courses is worth 5 credits, for a total of 15 credits if you complete all three courses.
As you may know, to graduate from high school in Alberta, you need to earn a total of 100 credits. By completing all three work experience courses, you will have earned 15 of these credits, which means you can choose to take fewer option classes or courses in other areas of study.
Research and find a work/volunteer placement that aligns with your interests and/or career goals.
Speak with your school's academic counsellor to express your interest in the work experience program and to obtain the necessary forms.
Complete two online safety courses, which are mandatory requirements for participation in the program. They are quite easy and not time-consuming.
Fill out the enrollment package, including all required forms and documentation, and return it to your academic counsellor.
Your work experience coordinator, who is usually the school counsellor, will contact you and schedule a visit to your work placement to meet your manager/supervisor and conduct a safety inspection of the site.
Begin working at your placement and keep track of your hours using the provided tracking sheet. Any hours worked prior to the coordinator's visit, do not count.
At the end of the work experience course, complete a self-assessment form and have your supervisor fill out a short evaluation form assessing your performance, attendance, and skills learned.
Your final grade will be determined based on your hours completed, your self-assessment, and your supervisor's evaluation.
It's important to note that the exact process and requirements may vary slightly depending on the school and school board. It's always a good idea to consult with your academic counsellor for specific details and guidance on the work experience program in your school.
To track your hours for the Work Experience Program in Alberta high schools, you will receive a tracking sheet or an online platform where you can log your work hours. It's important to keep track of your hours regularly to ensure that you are meeting the minimum requirements for each course.
For every 25 hours worked, you will earn 1 credit. As you may know, each Work Experience course is worth 5 credits. Once you have completed the required number of hours (25 hours x 5 credits = 125 hours), you will be able to receive the credits for the course and move on to the next course.
The same process applies to the next courses for a total of 15 credits if you complete all three courses.
You can earn a total of 15 high school credits if you complete all three courses.
It is easy to earn high grades if you are consistent.

If you have family friends who are business owners, we recommend you reach out to them first. Inform them that you are seeking volunteer/work opportunities. Make sure to explain to them how the work experience program works and how this opportunity will benefit you. Ensure they are familiar with the paperwork and inspection that are part of the process.
The work experience courses are very convenient in the summer. Students tend to have more time to work during the summer months. Doing so, will alleviate some of the workload during the academic year. Thus, you'll be better able to focus your time and energy on the core subjects. The work experience courses are not stressful. Meaning, you'll be able to enjoy your summer break while earning highschool credits. If you intend on doing this, ensure you plan ahead of time as the paperwork and inspection/visit need to be completed before you begin tracking your hours.
